Washington College Trap and Skeet Team Wins Event Gold

The Washington College Trap and Skeet Team (WCTS) brought home two gold medals and a bronze from the 2023 ACUI-SCTP Collegiate Clay Target National Championships, turning in its highest overall finish in the program’s history. The gold medals are the first national championship results at Washington College since 1998.

The top five scores count toward the team result and were turned in by Gage Williams (92/100), Carter Weems (89/100), Sean Scott (88/100), Greg Carpenter (87/100), and Ryland Reback (84/100). Altogether, they broke 440 out of a possible 500 targets.

The two women on the team each won individual medals. Kate Opielski won the Women's C-Class in American Skeet Doubles with a 74/100.  Hartley Meyer took third place in Women's B-Class American Skeet with a 91/100 and also received an academic certificate of achievement, given to athletes with a GPA (grade-point average) greater than 3.5.

Overall, WCTS finished in fifth place out of the 19 Division III colleges that competed in all six events, with a combined score of 2607/3000, its highest result since WCTS first competed at the championships in 2014.  

The team posted top-ten team scores in four of the other five events.

In Doubles American Skeet, WCTS matched last year's fourth place finish out of 23 teams with a 441/500 led by Gage Williams (92/100), Carter Weems (88/100), Sean Scott (88/100), Greg Carpenter (87/100), and Hunter Clark (86/100).

In Sporting Clays, the Shoremen broke a 376/500 placing them in fourth place out of 33 squads, a new team record finish, and the first time the team has finished in the top-ten.  The top five shooters were Carter Weems (79/100), Gage Williams (78/100), Hunter Clark (75/100), Jack Mayer (73/100), and Sean Scott (71/100).

In American Skeet WCTS finished in eighth place out of 33 teams breaking a 464/500 led by: Greg Carpenter (97/100), Carter Weems (93/100), Sean Scott (93/100), Hartley Meyer (91/100), and Ryland Reback (90/100).  

In American Trap Doubles WCTS finished ninth out of 33 teams breaking a 427/500 led by: Sean Scott (92/100), Carter Weems (91/100), Gage Williams (83/100), Hunter Clark (81/100), and Greg Carpenter (80/100).  

In American Trap WCTS finished 18th out of 33 teams 459/500 led by: Carter Weems (95/100), Sean Scott (93/100), Jack Mayer (92/100), Gage Williams (91/100), and Hunter Clark (88/100).
