The spring semester recognition follows similar success in the fall. Washington’s Women’s Swimming team had a team average GPA among the best in Division III throughout 2022-23.

The Washington College Women’s Swimming team was named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for the 2023 spring semester. Teams were selected based on their Spring 2023 team grade point averages, and out of the 161 Scholar All-America Teams in Division III, Washington’s Women’s Swim Team finished with a program high of 5th in the nation, boasting an outstanding 3.76 GPA.

“It is an amazing accomplishment to become a Scholastic All-American team, but this women’s team has raised the bar," said Phil Quick, head coach, swimming. "Not only are they Scholastic All-Americans, they have been in the Top 5 in the nation for the entire year. The women’s team was 3rd first semester and 5th in the second, a huge accomplishment that has never been done in program history. I could not be prouder of this group of women.”

Across all divisions, CSCAA selected 718 teams to the Scholar All-America Team, representing more than 17,400 student-athletes.

In Division III, the highest team GPA (3.88) was earned by the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, the joint athletics program of Pomona and Pitzer colleges. Claiming second, third and fourth, respectively, were University of New England (3.81), Hamline University (3.79) and Pacific Lutheran University (3.77). There was a four-way tie for fifth between Anderson University, Case Western Reserve University, Smith College and Washington College.

“I’m so proud of the women’s team for such a great achievement,” said Captain Emma Schultz ’24. “One of the reasons I committed to Washington College was the standard that the team is held to as we excel in the pool and in the classroom. It’s amazing to be able to say that we’re 5th in the nation for Scholastic All American. The drive and hard work on the team is contagious, and I’m so happy to be a part of it.”

There were also two individuals named to the Scholar All-America Second Team on the men’s side: Zach Affeldt '25 (political science) and Gage Mandrell '23 (neuroscience). All individual All-Americans earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

The CSCAA recognized a total of 2,290 (1,270 women and 1,020 men) individual swimmers and divers as Scholar All-Americans for the 2022-23 season. In Division III, 561 students were recognized—265 women and 296 men.

“Congratulations to these exceptional student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding achievements both in the classroom and in their sport,” said CSCAA Executive Director Samantha Barany. “The CSCAA takes pride in recognizing individuals who excel in academics while competing at the highest level. Earning a 3.5 GPA or higher is a remarkable accomplishment requiring dedication, discipline, and a commitment to academic excellence. Furthermore, competing at the national level is a testament to their talent, dedication, and perseverance in the water. These student-athletes have set themselves apart from their peers by excelling in both areas, showing their exceptional abilities and drive for excellence.”
