Student Environmental Alliance
The Student Environmental Alliance (SEA) promotes the ecological health of the campus, Chestertown community, and Chesapeake Bay region.
We work towards making WAC a regenerative campus. SEA inspires ecological thinking at the College. Our members get to weigh in on administrative issues while also creating a campus culture of sustainability by educating students and inspiring behavioral change.

George Goes Green (G3) Initiatives
The Student Environmental Alliance is working on a variety of initiatives to support the campus sustainability efforts. Each initiative has a dedicated sub-committee within the club.

We work to eliminate the sale and distribution of disposable plastic water bottles at Washington College by promoting the use of reusable water bottles at increasingly accessible refilling stations!
Food Waste Reduction
We educate students about composting and collect the compostable leftovers from students in the dining hall a couple meals a week to add to the compost pile in the Campus Garden.
We also have a chapter of the Food Recovery Network to recover the uneaten, untouched meals from the dining hall and feed those in need in the community.
R4: Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle
The four R’s..in that order! We educate students about waste reduction, promote fun ways to repurpose or “upcycle” old materials, and work to conserve energy and improve the recycling system on campus.
Events and Programs
Blackwater Wildlife Refuge/UGRR Hike
We partner with the Black Student Union and Cleopatra’s Sisters to connect with the environment and explore critical areas of conservation on the Eastern Shore.
Bottlecap Benches
We collect plastic bottlecaps for cradle-to-cradle reuse in campus seating.
Fall and Spring Break Camping
We team up with the Eastern Shore Food Lab to camp at the River and Field Campus outpost and develop the outdoor classroom. Previous trips have included the Shenandoah Valley and salt-making at Cape Henlopen.
Carbon Offset Initiative
We encourage create awareness about individual carbon footprints, with information about participating in carbon offset programs.
Citizens Climate Lobby Workshop
We host a program to teach participants how to communicate climate change to a lay audience.
Dorm Room Donation Drive
We collect gently used items to give back to students in the fall.
Environmental Art
We design and paint murals that highlight environmental sustainability.
Environmental Income Inequality Campaign
We address the global financial and environmental disparity between financial classes, displaying facts on income inequality using chocolate gold coins as a snack and symbol.
Healthy Mind, Healthy Environment
We collaborate with the Psych Club in a de-stressing event to acknowledge National Stress Awareness Month and Earth Day.
Marches, Protests, and Rallies
We join public demonstrations in promotion of social and environmental justice.
Recycling Fashion Competition at Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Department
Our participants wear recycled apparel from around campus in this Chestertown RiverArts event.
Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit
We help the Center for Environment & Society inspire high school students to take environmental action.
Volunteering and Litter Cleanups
We volunteer in the community and clean up litter around Fountain Park, the Chestertown waterfront, Rails-to-Trails pathway, and at Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Rock Hall.
Weekly and Monthly Meetings
We meet weekly to develop initiatives and plan events. Once a month we'll bring in sustainable, organic, and vegan snacks and drinks to prompt discussion among club members.
