Galleries + Projects

Kohl Gallery is Washington College's flagship venue for visual arts programming. Located in the Gibson Center for the Arts, Kohl Gallery fosters the study and understanding of art through a diverse range of exhibitions and public programs. Embracing its liberal arts context, Kohl Gallery presents fresh perspectives on historical and contemporary art and promotes interdisciplinary conversations about historical, social, and cultural issues of significance to Washington College, the Chestertown community and beyond. 

Kohl Gallery presents at least two shows per semester, featuring historical and contemporary artists as well as student work.  The annual 100 Proof exhibit presents artwork by Washington College students at all levels of study, while the spring Senior Capstone Experience exhibit presents a fully-developed body of work by each graduating Studio Art senior. SANDBOX

SANDBOX is a Washington College initiative designed to foster collaboration between the creative arts and sciences. Established through initial funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, SANDBOX promotes interdisciplinary approaches to art and inquiry, and frequently pairs practitioners from divergent fields such as theatre and mathematics, or Medieval literature and biology. SANDBOX exposes students to unconventional, nonlinear problem solving approaches, preparing them to enter the world as creative thinkers capable of adding fresh insight to any field. 

Artists and thinkers presented through SANDBOX include DJ Spooky, William Lamson, and Natalie Jeremejinko.

China Hutch Projects

China Hutch Projects, active from 2016-2019, was a project space for contemporary art located in the dining room of Prof. Julie Wills' home. Named for a built-in hutch in the corner of the room, the gallery hosted rotating exhibits, public receptions, performances, readings and other events, regularly attracting students and faculty from all departments, artists from throughout the Eastern Shore, and the Chestertown community at large. Pop-Up Galleries + Performance Events

 

Studio Art students regularly organize creative exhibits and presentations of their works, both on and off campus. Recent examples include a faculty studio turned into a temporary gallery, a student-organized performance art "happening," and a campus-wide pop-up art tour.
