Internships

Many biology majors choose to pursue internships off-campus that give them additional practical experience.

Several agencies of the National Institutes of Health have welcomed Washington College student interns, as have the Kennedy-Krieger Institute in Baltimore and the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington among many others. Students have won positions in competitive internship programs at a number of institutions, including Brandies University, the Univeristy of Pennsylvania, the University of Maryland.  Students interested  in careers in health sciences may intern with local doctors and pharmacists or learn from physicians during summer internship programs at a wide range of institutions, including the St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Towson and the Christiana Care Health System in Delaware.

Several internship opportunities are available to students interested in marine and estuarine biology—the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, UDEL’s College of Marine Studies, the Marine Fisheries Division of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Chester and Sassafras Riverkeepers have all hosted Washington College interns.

You can choose to work one-on-one with a faculty mentor in the lab, like Kaitlyn Marino ’19, or venture farther afield. Over the past couple of years, one of our most distinguished alumna scientists, Terumi Kohwi-Shigematsu ’71, has hosted students in her cancer research lab at the University of California, Berkeley.
